Methods Of Coiling Optical Fiber After Splicing

Fiber coiling is a technology as well as an art. The scientific fiber coiling method can make the fiber layout reasonable and eliminate fiber breakage caused by extrusion. Optical fibers are fragile. Excessive bending angles will damage or even break the optical fibers, causing communication interruption. The connection of optical fibers must go through multiple fiber splice closure.

After the communication engineers complete the optical fiber splicing in the fiber splice enclosure box, they need to coil the optical fibers one by one so that they cannot have excessive bending angles that will affect normal telecommunication. They also require the optical fibers to be beautiful and tidy to facilitate future maintenance. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid bird's-nest fiber coiling; to coil fiber well is a meticulous job that requires great patience and does not allow for any sloppiness. Before fiber coiling, the optical cable and pigtail should be pre-processed, and the optical cable and pigtail should be opened first. The key step is to calculate the reserved length and then splice the optical fiber. The success rate of optical fiber splicing is very important, because once the splicing fails, it must be repeated, resulting in uneven reserved lengths and making the entire disk unsatisfactory. The scientific fiber coiling method can make the optical fiber layout reasonable, with low additional loss, and withstand the test of time and harsh environments.

Rules For Coiled Fiber

The rule is to coil the fiber once after each splicing and heat shrinking of one or several optical fibers in fiber optic sleeve or optical fibers in a branch direction optical cable.

Advantages: It avoids the confusion of optical fibers between fiber protection sleeve or between different branch optical cables, making it reasonably laid out, easy to disk and dismantle, and easier to maintain in the future.

Methods Of Coiling Optical Fiber

1)First the middle and then both sides, that is, first place the heat-shrunk sleeves in the fixing groove one by one, and then process the remaining fibers on both sides. This will help protect the fiber optic joints and avoid possible damage caused by fiber coiling. This method is commonly used when the reserved fiber splice tray space of the fiber optic splice closure is small and the optical fiber is difficult to coil and fix.

2)Start coiling the fiber from one end, that is, coil the fiber from one side, fix the heat shrink tube, and then process the remaining fiber on the other side. The effective placement position can be flexibly selected according to the length of the remaining fiber on one side, which is convenient and fast, and can avoid sharp bends and small circles.

3)To deal with special situations, such as when individual optical fibers are too long or too short, they can be wound separately at the end. If it has special optical devices, it can be handled separately. If it is shared with ordinary optical fiber, it should be placed lightly on the ordinary optical fiber, and a buffer pad should be added between the two to prevent fiber breakage caused by extrusion. And the pigtail of special optical devices should not be too long.

4)According to the actual situation, a variety of graphic fiber discs are used. According to the length of the remaining fiber and the size of the reserved closure space, coil it naturally and do not pull it hard.

Coiled Fiber Example

①Pretreatment of the optical cable, the length of the optical cable stripping is 60-100cm, and 4cm is reserved for the reinforced core.

Pigtail pre-treatment, stripping length 60-100cm, or according to the conditions of the optical distribution box& optical splitter box.

③Fix the optical fiber and the reinforced core part of the optical fiber; peel off the bundle tube, leaving 2cm between the stripping part and the tie and the fixed point; use alcohol to wipe off the silicone oil, fix the bundle tube, and do not tighten it excessively.

④Odd number of coils. Take 3 turns as an example, and use odd-numbered turns. Reserve half of the odd-numbered turns on both sides, reserve 1.5 turns, and cut off the excess fiber. Pre-coil pigtails while reserving half of the odd-numbered turns. Reserve the pigtail and cut off the excess pigtail.
