Preparations for Successful Optical Cable Jetting

Optical cable jetting also called "Fiber Cable Blowing"  is a highly efficient method for laying underground optical cables. However, to ensure a smooth process, several preparations must be made before the actual cable jetting begins.


1. Inspection of the Duct System

Firstly, a complete inspection of the telecommunication duct system is essential. The ducts must be clean and without any obstructions such as debris, water, garbage or other objects. Any blockages can cause the optical cable to get stuck or damaged during the cable jetting process. For example, if there are small stones or sand in the duct, they can create friction and even puncture the outer sheath of the cable. Therefore, it is very necessary to clean the inner wall of the ducts with a cleaning sponge before fiber cable blowing.. Additionally, it is important to check for any structural damage to the ducts, such as microduct connectors fall off, duct cracks or bends. If the ducts are damaged or microduct connectors fall off, they may need to be repaired or replaced to ensure a smooth passage for the optical cable.

2. Fiber Cable Selection and Pre-treatment

The selection of the optical cable is crucial. The cable must be of high quality and suitable for the specific environment and application. It should have a proper outer sheath that can withstand the forces and conditions during cable jetting. Before jetting, the cable should be carefully inspected for any visible defects or damage. Any damaged sections should be repaired or replaced. Moreover, pre-treatment of the cable can be beneficial. For instance, applying a cable blowing lubricant to the cable can reduce friction and make it easier to slide through the duct. The lubricant should be compatible with the cable material and the duct environment to avoid any adverse effects.

3. Equipment Check and Calibration


The fiber blowing machine and other equipment needs to be in excellent working condition. This includes the air compressor, which provides the necessary air pressure for jetting the cable. The air pressure should be carefully calibrated to the appropriate level. Too low a pressure may not be sufficient to propel the cable, while too high a pressure could damage the cable or cause it to move uncontrollably. The cable blowing head is another critical component. It should be properly aligned and free of any clogs. Regular maintenance and calibration of the equipment can help ensure that it operates efficiently and reliably during the cable jetting process.

4. Environmental Considerations

Environmental should also be taken into account. The temperature and humidity of the environment can affect the performance of both the cable and the cable jetting equipment. For example, in extremely cold weather, the cable may become brittle and more prone to damage. In such cases, measures such as pre-heating the cable or using a cable that is more resistant to low temperatures may be necessary. Similarly, high humidity can cause condensation inside the ducts, which can interfere with the jetting process. Proper ventilation or dehumidification of the duct system may be required to mitigate this issue.


5. Safety Measures


Safety is of utmost importance during the entire process. Workers should be trained in the proper handling and operation of the jetting equipment. They should also be aware of the potential hazards associated with high-pressure air and electrical equipment. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection should be worn by the workers. Additionally, safety protocols should be in place to handle any emergencies that may arise during the jetting process, such as equipment failure or cable entanglement.
