Cleaning microducts before fiber blowing is a crucial step to ensure optimal performance and reliability of fiber optic installations. Microducts are small conduits used to house and protect fiber optic cables. Dust, debris, and contaminants inside the microducts can impede the smooth installation of fiber cables. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to effectively clean microducts before fiber blowing.

How to Clean Microducts Before Fiber Blowing(1)

Step 1: Inspection: Begin by inspecting the microducts for any visible dirt, dust, or debris. Examine the entry and exit points, as well as the interior of the microducts, using a flashlight or suitable illumination. Identify any blockages or obstructions that may hinder the fiber blowing process.

Step 2: Compressed Air: Using compressed air is an effective method to clean microducts. Attach an air compressor to the microduct system or use a handheld air blower. Ensure the air is clean and dry to prevent introducing additional contaminants. Insert the air nozzle into one end of the microduct and apply a controlled burst of air. The high-pressure air will dislodge and push out any loose dirt or debris present within the microduct. Repeat the process for each microduct section.

Step 3: Brush Cleaning: For more stubborn or adhesive contaminants, a brush cleaning technique can be employed. Use a small, soft-bristle brush specifically designed for microduct cleaning. Gently insert the brush into the microduct and rotate it in a clockwise and counterclockwise motion to dislodge any residue clinging to the inner walls. Care should be taken not to damage or scratch the microduct surface while brushing.

Step 4: Flushing: Flushing the microducts with a suitable cleaning solution can provide a deeper clean. Prepare a cleaning solution by diluting a recommended fiber optic cleaning solution or mild detergent with deionized or distilled water. Fill a clean container with the cleaning solution and attach a tubing or hose to the microduct entry point. Gently flush the microducts by allowing the cleaning solution to flow through the system. This helps remove any remaining contaminants and provides a thorough cleaning.

Step 5: Drying: After cleaning and flushing, it is crucial to ensure the microducts are completely dry before proceeding with fiber blowing. Allow the microducts to air dry in a clean, dust-free environment. Alternatively, use compressed air or a specialized drying tool to accelerate the drying process. Ensure there is no moisture or cleaning solution residue left within the microducts before proceeding to the fiber blowing stage.
