First of all, let's understand the aging process of the electrode rod. The electrode rod looks like a very sharp needle with the naked eye. During the actual use, the loss of the electrode rod is much as shown in the figure below. During the discharge process, due to the high energy and high heat, the glass ions in the fiber itself diffuse and adsorb to the tip of the electrode rod, forming non-conductive insulating impurities. These impurities can be observed with the naked eye on the stick.The generation of insulating film will make the arc avoid it for discharge, so the original loss from the top may change to start from the rear, which will increase the wear speed of the tip of the electrode rod in the long run, making it very irregular .

In this case, the arc originally triggered by two stable tips will become extremely unstable, and there may be an alarm on the fusion splicer (the discharge is too left or too right), so that it cannot provide a stable heat source for the fusion of optical fibers , the final splice loss will not be ideal.


Therefore, the life of the electrode rod may not be as long as we imagined. When the above situation occurs, in order to ensure the quality of welding, a new electrode rod must be replaced.

And it is also very important to choose the original electrode rod. Fake and shoddy electrode rods have abnormalities such as materials that cannot withstand high temperature and different sizes. In this case, not only the life of the electrode rod itself will be very short, but also the discharge voltage may be unstable. In this case, it will bring a burden to the power devices inside the fusion splicer, and even cause damage.

Of course, the wear of the electrode rod is affected by many external factors, such as the humidity of the air, temperature and the material of the optical fiber, etc., so the life of the electrode rod in different working environments may vary a lot.
