The operating environment of the Fiber Optic Cleaver is relatively harsh, so proper operation and maintenance are of great significance to ensure the service life of the cleaver and the quality of fiber cutting. The Fiber Optic Cleaver produced by FCST is a compact and easy-to-operate Fiber Optic Cleaver, which can be used to cut SM, MM, DS, NZDS optical fibers, and is widely used in optical fiber communication construction.

The Principle Of Fiber Cleaving

1) The upper and lower Pressure Modules of the Fiber Optic Cleaver hold the fiber.

2) Use a Cleaver blade to make an incision on the fiber.

3) The fiber is finally cut by pressing the fiber through Anvil Block.

Figure 2.The Principle Of Fiber Cleaving-1

If there is dirt on the Fiber Optic Cleaver, the Pressure Module will not be able to hold the fiber properly. If the optical fiber is cleaved in such a state, a good cleaved end face cannot be obtained.

Therefore, in order to obtain a good cleaved end face when using Fiber Optic Cleaver to cleave optical fibers, the maintenance of Pressure Module, Anvil Block, and Cleaver blade is very important.

Stripping And Cutting Of Optical Fibers

The following is a detailed description of the stripping and cutting process of bare optical fibers in combination with pictures and text:

1) Open the pressure lever and small pressure plate, and push the slider with the blade to the side in front of you.

2) Strip the fiber coating layer about 30mm long, and wipe the bare fiber with a cotton ball dipped in anhydrous alcohol.

3) Align the edge of the fiber coating with the appropriate scale on the cutting knife ruler (10~20mm),

4) Put the fiber into the fiber guide groove with the left hand, and ask the bare fiber to be placed straight on the rubber pad.

5) Close the small pressure plate and pressure rod, push the slider with the blade, so that the blade cuts the lower surface of the fiber,And freely slide to the other side, cut the fiber, pay attention not to use too much force.

6) Hold the cutting knife with the left hand, and open the pressing rod with the right hand.

7) Pinch the fiber with your left hand, open the small pressure plate with your right hand, and carefully remove the fiber with the cut end face.

Note: The neat fiber end face should not touch other objects.

Optical Fiber Cutting Quality Judgment

The quality of fiber cutting has an important influence on the loss of fiber splicing. The cutting angle of the end face of the Fiber Optic Cleaver should be no more than 0.5°, and the cutting end face of the fiber should be flat, without burrs, and without core defects.

Blade Adjustment And Replacement

During the fiber cutting process, if the fiber cutting quality deteriorates and the fiber is continuously cut, the height or position of the blade needs to be adjusted in time. If the blade is found to be severely worn, please replace the blade.

a. Height adjustment of blade:

1) Remove the fiber collection box

2) Loosen the 2 blade fixing screws

3) Loosen the blade height fixing screw

4) Adjust the height adjustment screw (increase clockwise, 1 scale is about 10μm)

5) Tighten the blade height fixing screw

6) Tighten the 2 blade fixing screws, be careful not to over-tighten the blade fixing screws

b. Adjustment of blade angle:

1) Remove the fiber collection box

2) Loosen the locking screw

3) Rotate the blade to the next number position

4) Tighten the locking screw, taking care not to over-tighten the locking screw

5) Install the fiber collection box

c. Replace the blade:

1) Remove the fiber collection box

2) Loosen the locking screw and take out the locking screw and gasket

3) Carefully clamp both sides of the blade with tweezers, gently lift and remove the blade

4) Replace with a new blade (please choose 41 special blades)

5) Insert the gasket, tighten the locking screw, be careful not to over-tighten the locking screw

6) Install the fiber collection box

Cleaning And Maintenance

Since the Fiber Optic Cleaver is a precision instrument and its use environment is relatively harsh, proper cleaning and maintenance are particularly important. When it is found that the cutting quality of the cleaver is poor or the fiber is not easy to cut, a large part of the reason is that dust or debris has fallen into the Cleaver blade, upper and lower platens, guide grooves, etc., so frequent cleaning and maintenance are required. Specific steps are as follows:

1) Use a cotton swab dipped in anhydrous alcohol (other organic solvents cannot be used), and wipe the upper and lower platens in one direction.

2) Dip a cotton swab with anhydrous alcohol and rotate the blade in one direction.

3) Use a cotton swab dipped in anhydrous alcohol to clean and wipe the guide groove.

Common Faults And Solutions

1). The optical fiber is not placed in the correct slot (please select the position suitable for your optical fiber cable among the 3 slots)

2). The position of the blade is too high (please fine-tune the height of the blade)

3). There is garbage left on the optical fiber holding clamp (please clean the clamp with alcohol cotton)

4). There are foreign objects such as dust on the blade (please use alcohol cotton to clean the blade)

5). There are foreign objects such as dust on the optical fiber (please remove the optical fiber coating again, and clean the bare optical fiber with alcohol cotton)

Precautions

1) Pay attention to protect the blade during use and cleaning, and do not touch the blade with hard objects.

2) The blade is sharp, do not touch it with your hands.

3) Handle with care and pay attention to protection.
